My New Favorite Thing to Do On the Treadmill

is….

READ!

nookontreadmill1It seems kind of crazy, because it is a little difficult – but seriously, it makes the time pass sooo much faster.

If I’m not running outside, the sights and sounds on the treadmill can be exactly the opposite of exciting.

A lot of the time I do like to zone out and use running as relaxation/meditation/a de-stresser and just listen to my tunes. But other times (especially on the treadmill) it is lovely to have a run fly by and just be over with!

I just finished my book club book, What Alice Forgot, last night.

It’s a girly fluff book that is a fast and fun read. Definitely a good vacation [or treadmill] book.

Now I’m starting The Secret Race, which obviously has some serious dramz.

I do love me some athletic man drama.

Keep in mind I’m reading on my nook! I think it would be a lot harder to read an actual book while running – but I haven’t tried it, so who knows.

If only I could get rid of the reading-with-drunk-goggles-on feeling…

http://edithwithgooglyeyes.tumblr.com/ (aka, funniest site ever)

http://edithwithgooglyeyes.tumblr.com/ (Why is this site so funny to me?!)

Warning: reading on the treadmill may cause slight motion sickness.

But I think I’ll get the hang of it eventually!

Do you read on the treadmill? Or while working out?

The Perfect Cadence Playlist

Not only did my friend Vicki inform me about tofu, she also was kind enough to share the best running playlist ever with me.

What’s so special about this playlist?

It was made for runners.

Let me explain.

Actually, let this screen shot of some internet research explain.

My fav running book, Born to Run, backs this up.

“Fortunately, Ken had already begun doing physiological testing on triathletes as part of his kinesiology studies…Ken’s first test subject was Alan Melvin, a world-class Masters triathlete in his sixties. First, Ken set a baseline by having Melvin run four hundred meters full out. Then he clipped a small electric metronome to his T-shirt.

‘What’s this for?’

‘Set it for one hundred eighty beats a minute, then run to the beat...’

‘Kenyans have superquick foot turnover,” Ken said. “Quick, light leg contractions are more economical than big, forceful ones.’

Within a year of creating his new technique in 1997, Ken became unbeatable, winning the world disabled championship the next two years in a row. Once word got out that Ken had figured out a way to run that was not only fast but gentle on the legs, other triathletes began hiring him as their coach. Ken went on to train eleven national champions and built up a roster of more than one hundred athletes” (McDougall, Christopher: Born to Run, page 149).

Yes, I’ve tried to count my footstrikes during a run….and yes, I always lose count within approximately fifteen seconds.

With Vicki’s cadence playlist from Spotify, the music counts for me! I recommend downloading any of the below songs – they all consist of 180 beats per minute, perfect for running.

  • Vampire weekend: A-Punk
  • Postal Service: Such Great Heights
  • Presidents of the United States of America: Kick Out the Jams
  • MuteMath: Electrify
  • Jimmy Eat World: Praise Chorus
  • Don Henley: Boys of Summer
  • Tinie Tempah: Written in the Stars
  • Metric: Gold Guns Girls
  • TV On the Radio: Wolf Like Me
  • Iggy Pop: Some Weird Sin
  • Billy Idol: Dancing with Myself
  • Black Keys: Everlasting Light

They sure helped me with my long run on Sunday!

What are some of your favorite songs to run to? (I need to add some more to my iPod!)

Weekend Recap

Big news today. I ran 8 miles outside and didn’t die.

Though I kind of thought I was going to during miles 6-8.

longrun8milelongrun8milespace

You can tell I was dying by my even slower slow splits.

I was glad I got to run outside on my fav new beautiful trail, though. We all know that long runs on the treadmill can seem like torture.

On Saturday afternoon, Tuna and I went to the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria to check out his sister-in-law’s awesome art exhibit.

torpedofactory1It was pretty cool that we got to tour the exhibit with the artist!

Afterwards we headed over to RedRocks Pizzeria for some beer and fancy pizza.

I sampled the Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale (not gonna lie, I picked it just because of the name) and it was delish.

sumpin'sumpin'1It’s a good thing that the pizza was amazing, because Tuna and I were pretty pissed about our appetizer. We experienced a terrible injustice when our “bacon wrapped scallops” order arrived with ONE measly scallop.

scallop2We ate our nine dollar scallop in one bite.

New obsession = Homeland.

If you haven’t started it yet, you have to. End of story.

Let’s cross our fingers that I wake up tomorrow! It always seems harder to get out of bed the day after a long run. My clean sheets are calling – catch ya later!

Tell me about your weekend! What did you do?

Getting Location

I realized yesterday that the Shamrock Half Marathon is in less than two months!

That is kind of terrifying.

I did feel more like a real runner this past weekend though because I finally got to use my brand-new Garmin Forerunner 10 that my dad got for me for Christmas!

garmin1It is pretty cool that I will be able to show you sweet charts and stats from my runs now – though I may not want to because they are embarrassingly slow. But I did read in Runner’s World that the first few years of distance running are about building your mileage, not freaking out about your time.

Of course I messed up the stats from my first Garmin run. I accidentally pressed “save run” in the middle of it, so the run was split into two separate stats!

The lap button also seems to hate me because it said I did 13 laps and I only ran 6 miles. Whoops. I’ll have to figure that out this weekend

It is interesting that I am not at all concerned with my times with the Garmin, but waaay more concerned about my pace (and distance, of course).

The other very exciting part of my run on Sunday was the new trail I ran on! I finally ventured over to the very flat, very awesome trail leading into D.C. near Tuna’s house.

It had such cool scenery – like this ancient brick tunnel.

bridgeonrun

I’m definitely going to start running on this trail more often. Can spring please come asap so it won’t get dark at 5pm and we can all run on the trails outside all night long?

I refueled this weekend with Tuna’s cheesy chicken. He had the genius idea to shove a bunch of cheddar cheese inside of it.

cheesechickenI may start shoving cheddar cheese inside all of my food.

Do you use a Garmin?

Are there any good trails to run on near you?

My First Giveaway!

This is a big day in Chicken Nugget Girl land because this is my 100th post! That seems like a lot of posts of incessant ramblings. It seems like just yesterday I was gearing up for the Tough Mudder, and now I’m signed up to run my first half marathon!

So why do a giveaway? Because I can!

I Have Lots of Exciting Things to Tell You

1. Christmas was awesome.

I spent Christmastime surrounded by family and friends and it was perfect!

It also helped that Santa was overly generous to me – he must be excited that I started running this year or something. I almost felt a little guilty that I got so many sweet goodies. I’m sure they’ll all pop up on CNG at some point, but I’ll highlight a few of my favs because I am so excited to use them that I’m debating squeezing in runs this week at an ungodly hour.

So without further ado, some of my amazing gifts:

    • Foam Roller

And not just any foam roller, but a fancy foam roller from Trigger Point. Thanks, Mom!

I was so eager to start foam rolling that I immediately did on the floor in front of everyone on Christmas morning. Until a little birdie stole it from me!

bfoamroll

I was completely blown away that my dad got me the Garmin Forerunner! I am dying to use it. Saturday long run, here I come. Slash I may just wear it at all times because I am in love.

For once I won’t have to study satellite images of the specific arrangement of foliage on mapmyrun.com to determine how far I need to run/ran.

2. I am officially signed up to race a new distance.

13.1When my friend Mal told me that she was going to run the Anthem Half Marathon in March and asked me if I wanted to run too, I didn’t hesitate to register!

Eeek!

I am slightly terrified but also really excited.

The Anthem Half is on the same day/course of the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach. You can see the beach from the course and it’s supposed to be really flat, which is absolutely necessary. I don’t want a repeat of the Tough Mudder where I sucked it up running-wise on the rolling hills of Crumland Farms.

The Shamrock Marathon weekend is so legit that there is even a race expo! I’m finally going to get to see all the cool booths and gear that real running bloggers talk about.

I never thought sprinter me would even want to run a half marathon – ever. But I do! I’m pumped to have a new race and new distance to train for that will really challenge me.

Did you get or give any cool running gear this Holiday season?

Tell me what race/event you’re signed up for next!

Healthy Living Holiday Wish List

I love looking at other bloggers’ Holiday wish lists, so I decided to share mine with you!

Maybe it will give you some ideas for gift giving for your healthy living/run-obsessed friends – or for you to ask for! In my fam, if you don’t provide a list of present options for people to get you, you’re in big trouble.

  • Garmin Forerunner 10 GPS Watch

Ok, so I didn’t quite ask for this specifically, because it has the price tag is a little steep at $130, but this would be my dream watch. My stopwatch unfortunately died in Brazil due to a tragic nail polish explosion.

According to amazon.com, this new Garmin Forerunner has:

  • High sensitivity GPS receiver
  • Records position, speed/pace, distance and calories
  • Easy-to-use, button operated
  • Virtual Pacer compares current pace to target
  • Auto Lap and pause.

Perhaps this one shall have to wait until my birthday. 🙂

  • BIC Bands
Apologies for this odd pic. I was cold on Rockville 10K day.

Apologies for this odd pic, but it’s a good BIC Band shot. I was cold on Rockville 10K day.

I am one of those people that has to have everything feeling PERFECT during a run. If my shoelaces aren’t tied at the right level of tightness I have to stop and re-tie. I know, I’m slightly cray cray, but please tell me you do this too!

Anyway, I’m the same way about my hair during a run. It MUST be out of my face. My friend Mal got me a BIC Band for my birthday last year, and now I can’t run without one! They stay in place so you don’t have to be constantly messing with your ponytail like I am forever messing with my running wedgies. Sorry in advance to anyone ever running behind me on a treadmill.

Not only are BIC Bands cute and relatively inexpensive, a portion of funds are donated to charity.

Speaking of running wedgies these are apparently the solution to them.

Many runners swear by them – the only problem is that they’re about the same price as my monthly electric bill. I guess lights and heat are more important in my life than not having running wedgies (right now.)

  • Magazine subscription to Runner’s World
  • Foam Roller

I have grown tired of using the one at the gym, especially after sweaty people. Gross. I would also like to foam roll with a glass of wine in hand for the entirety of every Real Housewives episode.

  • Chia Seeds

Let’s cut to the chase: chia seeds are damn expensive. Instead of buying a packet of chia seeds from Whole Foods that will last you 10 overnight oat jars for $12.99, order them in bulk here like my Mom does.

Though – I wonder if you could grow chia seeds from the hair on a Chia Pet. That would be both cost effective and beneficial to my apartment decor. Looks like I have some research to do….

What is on YOUR healthy living Holiday wish list?

Incline Treadmill Workout

I can’t believe our Miami/Brazil trip is almost here!

No, I haven’t been looking at the weather in Miami and Rio all day every day…

I just might be able get on board with those temps.

Another positive aspect of the trip – I’ve been in the mood to work out a lot, since I need to take down my box of summer clothes from the top of the closet pronto. I’ve got a good routine going for the first time since Tough Mudder.

I tried a new workout on Thursday night after my friend Mal told me about it. Mal ran her first marathon this weekend and killed it with a Boston Qualifier!

Mal’s friend showed her this workout – and he’s a former DC United Player, so he must know what he’s talking about!

I really liked this workout for a once a week cross-training day. It’s the perfect combo of hard work and recovery with enough variation not get too bored on the treadmill. Just please don’t tell anyone that I clipped the emergency treadmill stopper to my shirt. I had visions of myself suddenly stumbling down my self-made mountain.

Have you tried any new workouts lately?

Rockville 10K Race Recap

I had a hard time falling asleep on Saturday night because as always, I was worried about waking up on time.

Luckily, I woke up right when my alarm went off 6:20 AM. I had two squares of my pumpkin bars with some Kona coffee and read some blogs while I ate. After a teensy bit of stretching, I headed out the door at 7:00 AM sharp.

The race was small enough to be super organized and big enough to make you feel semi important.

It was awesome that the start of the race was in a shopping center because a lot of the nearby businesses were open early and were setting up booths = bathrooms that were not porta potties.

I went into the warm coffee shop and had the genius idea to go in the men’s bathroom because typ, there was the usual long-ass line outside the women’s bathroom. I successfully used the men’s bathroom in the coffee shop three times that morning.  (Don’t worry, it was a one person bathroom.) Thanks, men! You’re the best.

I wandered out toward the start of the race with t-minus twenty minutes to go. When I looked over to my left, my mom was right there! Thanks for coming to the race, Mom! I had my own personal paparazzi for the morning.

Meanwhile, it was freezing out. It reminded me of swim team when I was little and the water on Saturday morning A-meets was so cold during warm-ups. It would only be bad for the split second that you jumped in, and once you got moving, it wasn’t too bad. I wanted to get moving.

Before I knew it, it was time to start.

The race was….uneventful! Uneventful was kind of perfect, actually. I started off forcing myself to chill the eff out with some slower music. It was necessary to be reminded that my goal wasn’t to go fast and try to be someone I’m not – but rather just be in the moment and trot along only for me.

Though it was a relief to know that in my slowness I was alongside couples in serious runner runner-gear who were just as slow as I was. It made me feel like I wasn’t that much of a tool for thinking I was cool runnin’ in my 10K.

I even ended up passing a few people along the way. Thank god I passed the girl running with a giant butterfly clip to hold up her hair and the lady running with an iridescent pashmina scarf draped around her neck.

My music played a big role in my steady pace. During the Purple Stride 5K I barely heard it, since I was slightly blackout from all the adrenaline of my first race.

The course wasn’t the most glamorous, as it  winded us through a business park, but the rolling hills advertised on the race website were actually legit painless rolling hills. And best of all: mile markers this time.

I got excited about halfway through when I saw the fast guys and the leaders sprint past me running in the opposite direction. They were so fast! It felt like I was observing the people I’ve been reading about and pretending I know.

I figured the next turnaround in the race loop must be coming up soon. I sped up a tiny bit and a few people started walking. Ok…where was this stupid turnaround?

A mile and a half later, I finally came to the turnaround and started getting tired [four and a half miles.] The only “I want to give up” moment came when the one and only actual hill of the race surfaced at mile five and a half. I used one of Janae’s theories on hill running to get up the damn thing: pump your arms faster – your legs have to to follow!

I probably had a little too much still left in the tank at the end but I’m still happy, since I met my #1 goal of this race.

I felt great after the race – tired and glad to stop running, but strong and proud of myself. I actually thought to myself during the run “slow and steady wins the race.”  Dorky…but true for me.

All of my rough splits taken from my cheap/stolen watch were gorgeously even.

I love it when breakfast feels well deserved. 🙂

Did you run a race this weekend? Tell me about it!
